SF Right to Life

Yesterday the pro life folks came to San Francisco to march down Embarcadero by the thousands. And, this being the City by the Bay, large numbers of people came out to protest them. I showed up for a while in case a 'news event' should occur, but everything was peaceful, if not jovial.
Here, briefly, is what I saw.

Pro lifers gather downtown before the march.

Plenty of police where on hand to ensure both sides stayed on good behavior.

A Pro Choicer argues her case.

Police effectively controlled interaction between the groups.

Ave Maria

Ave Maria, the brainchild of Domino's Pizza founder Tom Monaghan, is a catholic mission town located more or less in the middle of nowhere 45 minutes East of Naples, Florida.
It is designed in the style of an Italian hill town, with a HUGE church in the center. It is also the home of a Catholic University and K-12 school.

The streets are named appropriately.

2006, the year the church was built, marked in classic roman style.

"The Bean", a coffee shop and one of the few businesses open, features images and statues of catholic iconography, and Fox News.

Students exit the K-12 school. Enrollment was six hundred this year.

Many dead end streets where, someday, residents will live.

King Pan

Last Saturday I photographed the 12th annual King Pan festival at the Iu Mien cultural center in Oakland. An indigenous southeast Asian people, the Iu Mien are culturally similar to the larger and more politically active Hmong, and have faced centuries of oppression under the Chinese government. Obviously, I'm still learning about the history. But it was fun to take the pictures, and I got to try raw ground beef salad. It was excellent.

Ren-Faire Food

I photographed the food preparation and consumption for St. Andrews Royal Order of Noble Scots' annual Winters Feast. All dishes were prepared in a simple and historically correct method, and the quantities of meat were, um, large. Still working on a final edit, but here are a couple that caught my eye.

Dia de los muertos

I photographed the procession through the mission district last Friday. Lately I've been enamored with the engravings of Jose Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican artist from the early 20th/late 19th century. His work was running through my mind as I made these images. I hope you enjoy them.

What I've been up to

So school has seriously been kicking my ass for the past month or so, hence a severe drop off in post frequency. However, below are a couple things I've photographed recently, some for the magazine, some just for fun. Hope you enjoy.
