Apologies for the prolonged absence, but a lot has happened since the last post. I've moved out of the Yuba/Sutter counties and returned to the Bay Area, this time Oakland. Although I love it here and am happy to be back, I do miss the unique culture and open space of the north valley. Here are a few portraits from my last couple months.

For the past six months I've been following Lydia through her treatment and surgery for stage II breast cancer. She has finished chemotherapy treatment and is doing well, awaiting some physical reconstruction surgery. Below is a frame of her cheering on her son at his High School soccer game a few days ago.

For the past few months, I've been following Lydia Evans as her life has been turned upside down by breast cancer. The experience has been traumatic and life-altering for her and her family; eye-opening for me. Last week, Lydia went to try on wigs at a local beauty parlor in anticipation of the hair loss that accompanies chemotherapy. She was understandably frustrated by her situation. You can see more from this project, which I'm tentatively calling one in eight, on my website - www.weylandphoto.com/one-in-eight. One in eight woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in their life.

My heart goes out to Lydia and her family, and I wish her a speedy recovery.

Spent May 1st in San Francisco for the premier of All About Evil, the debut film from San Francisco writer/director Joshua Granell, at the Castro Theater. Of course, a live music and dance extravaganza proceeded the film.

Went to the middle day of the Colusa Western Days today, during which there is a cattle drive through town. Seriously couldn't miss that. Plenty of awesome hats was a bonus.

Yesterday, as part of an ongoing project examining water issues in California, I visited Monticello Dam in Solano County. Monticello Dam creates Lake Berryessa, a recreational hotspot and the largest lake in Napa County.

Damtender Ken Emigh of the Solano Irrigation District was kind enough to show me around. No photos inside the dam, though; since 9/11, the Bureau of Reclamation has drastically stepped up security. Regular public tours of the dam are no longer given.

First, from a hike in the central sierra to Feather Falls, one of the highest falls in California. It was a brutal hike as out of shape as I am these days. But I took along a couple rolls of Velvia 100f which kept me distracted.

California Department of Water Resources conducted their second snow survey in late January, in the Central Sierra near South Lake Tahoe. Results are slightly above average for this time of year, but much more is needed to fill California reservoirs.

San Francisco's Fisherman's wharf, where the crab season is keeping this normally salmon-centric fleet afloat.
Flooded rice fields under power lines await Spring planting in Sutter County, California.
Sportfisherman at Knights Landing near Sacramento take advantage of a very short season.
...And pot plants in a grower's bathroom, San Francisco.

Pescadores profesionales de Fishermans Wharf, San Francisco, donde lo congrejo está ayudando mantenarse a flote esta flota normalmente centrada en el Salmón.

Came to San Francisco to catch the last day of the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, an amazing free annual concert in Golden Gate Park featuring the biggest names in American Folk music and lots more. I was mostly enjoying myself, but here are a peek at the diverse and never boring San Francisco crowd.

Hello all, it's been a while once again. Please accept my apologies, I'm at this moment resolving myself to posting more often. However, I haven't been completely idyll and have a few announcements:
-I've moved out of San Francisco to Sutter, a small farm town an hour north of Sacramento.
-I've launched a website, featuring the best of my documentary, editorial, still life and wedding work. I'm pursuing wedding and quinceañera work in California and Mexico. If you have a moment, please take a look.

I just left the big city for the sleepy farmtown of Sutter, about an hour north of Sacramento. For my first photographic adventure i went to the local racetrack. It's a place I plan to explore more in the future.

It's been a while since my last post, forgive me. School has started and I've been working on some things that are not ready to share yet, but stay tuned.

Having said that, attached are a few images from some time spent today with the fisherman of Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco. In the past hundred years the number of commercial fishing families based in San Francisco has dropped from 300 to roughly 30. Nearly all of those who remain have left the city for lower cost of living, and commute to fish. Plans are in the works to revitalize the fishing community and establish a more direct commercial relationship with the citizens of San Francisco. Salmon season has been canceled on them for the second year in a row due to incredibly few returning fish, a frustrating reality.

Así dicho, aqá hay algunas fotos de un rato que gasté con los pescadores de Fishermans Wharf, San Francisco. Durante los cien años pasados el numero de famílias pescadoras basados en San Francisco ha bajado de 300 a más o menos trenta. Casi todos que se quedan han salido de la ciudad por el costo de vivir, y viajar cuando necesitan pescar. Tienen plan de vigorizar la communidad pescadora y establecer relaciones comerciales mas directas con el público. La temporada de Salmón fue cancelado para el segundo año por falta de pescas en volver, una realidad frustrante.

Today was my last full day en México. In the evening I went to my local market, Jamaica, to take some pictures. Photographed an annual, supposedly religious, festival here in Iztacalco DF, in the colonia Magdelena de Mixiuca. Almost every little neighborhood in the city has their own version of this, but generally they consist of beat up carnival rides in back alleys, lots of beer/tequila (plus varied mixtures of the two), and VERY unsafe fireworks. Ours even had a 'running of the bulls', where a dude puts on a huge bull-shaped hat loaded with fireworks and chases people down the narrow streets while they go off. AWESOME!

Saqué fotos de una fiesta anual, supongo que religiosa, aqui en Iztacalco en la colonia Magelena de Mixiuca. Casí todas las colonias tienen algo muy similiar, generalmente con juegos en las calles, mucha cerveza y tequila (y mezclados como la cubana), y fuegos artificiales MUY peligorsos. Nuestro tuvo un corre de los torritos. ¡INCREDIBLE!

Went to the Zocalo this morning, a historic day for Mexico. Today the people cast there vote for against reform of the state oil company, Pemex. Unfortunately, this kind of political action dosn't usually make for great photos, so I turned my camera elsewhere. This is what I saw.

After three or so days of very heavy rain, a sewage and run-off pit almost breached this evening in Iztapalapa on the edge of DF. It would have flooded hundreds of homes with raw sewage. Fortunately the workers laid enough sand bags, and we had a dry evening....

Spent some time in Neza yesterday, to watch the final presentation of Project Luz, an NGO which has been holding photography workshops for the children of this poverty stricken city. It was a beautiful, community centered event. Here are some pictures I made in between.

Skulls / Calaveras

This morning I ran into a taco stand piled high with sheep skulls. The proprieter told me they had been wrapped in leaves of the Maguey plant, and slow cooked in an underground oven. I ordered a taco, and he took a skull from the pile, broke it open with two brutal strikes of a cleaver, pulled out the meat from inside, fried it for about 45 seconds and handed me the sweetest, most delicate cabeza I've ever tasted. Topped with a little chile habanero, onion, and lime, it was taco heaven.

Este mañana encontré una taquería con un montán de calaveras de cordero. El propietario me dijo que cocinaron en horno bajo la tierra, envuelto con las pincas de maguey. Pidí un taco, y el tomó un calavera, la rompó con dos golpes brutales de su cuchilla, sacó la carne y la freió por unos 45 segundos. Luego me dió la mas dulce, mas delicato cabeza que yo he probado. Con un poco chile habanero, cebolla, y limon, era buenisimo!

Later, on the way home, I found this nice gentleman who allowed me to take his portrait.

Today there was a punk/ska/pop concert in the Zocalo, the central square here in Mexico City. I don't know how many thousands of youths from DF showed up to dance and scream and be seen.

Did some photography last night. First, went to a neighbors street stand, that's him on the left, they call him chino. Below is him with his wife.

Saqué algunas fotos anoche. Primero, fui a la tiendita de un vecino, se llaman Chino. Esta el a la izquierda, y de bajo con su espoza.

Then the power went off in the neighborhood because of a rains storm, so I photographed some other neighbors working by candlelight.

Luego la electricidad fue por la lluvia, entonces saqué fotos de otro vecinos trabajando por la luz de belas.

And finally, the power crew showed up to repair the transducer that had blown.

Y por fin, los electricistas aparacieron para arreglar la electricidad.

Went out this morning to two different markets here in Mexico City -- Merced and Jamaica.

After maybe two or so hours in Merced, I was approached by a man from the administration who said I couldn't take any more photos. They claimed I could use the pictures to arrange kidnappings for human trafficking. I'm pretty sure they wanted me to pay them off. I left.

Este mañana saqué unos fotos de dos mercados aquí en D.F. -- La Merced y Jamaica.

Despues unas dos horas en la merced, me acercó un muchacho de la administración del mercado. Me dijo que yo no podría sacar mas fotos, porque yo los usaría para arreglar secuestros de la gente que aparecen en las fotos. Pienso que me quiesieran que yo les pagaría. Salí.

This corn on the cob, with a light dusting of chile and cheese, was made by the neighbor of the family I'm staying with. You eat it while still hot, with fresh squeezed lime and a little salt.

Today I photographed a local Church of God in preperation for their 67th anniversary next Sunday. It was a beautiful, lively and touching worship, but I found the ideology far too fundamental for my taste. Beautiful and welcoming people though....

Below are pictures of two elders who I will be focusing on for the anniversary. They have been kind enough to allow me to photograph them at home, so that will be coming later this week. Both are sweet, beautiful people.

Herbie, who I met working on my neighborhood project, is a homeless man who spends much of the day on the corner across the street from my apartment. I've been tagging around with him for a while, making pictures and getting to know these familiar streets from a whole new perspective. The experiences range from tenderness to brutality, and I hope the images reflect this variety.

An old friend of his from Pittsburgh, who new him before he was homeless, lives in the neighborhood also. The experiences I've had talking to her and photographing him have made me ponder, once again, how close many of us are to living on the streets. Any combination of a missed paycheck, family crisis, or worsening addiction could wreak enough havoc in our lives...
